Sainsbury’s is the second-largest supermarket chain in the United Kingdom and one of our strategic clients, purchasing the largest percentage of Fairtrade fruit that we produce in the regions of Urabá and Santa Marta.
A few days ago, we received representatives from the commercial and sustainability teams of this important retail chain, as well as from Fyffes International, at our facilities in Urabá. We conducted a guided tour of the Altamira farm, owned by Agrosiete S.A.S., and the Génesis farm, owned by Agrícola Uberaba S.A.S., where we developed a recognition agenda covering the facilities and the banana production processes, including fieldwork, packing operations, and logistics. It is important to mention that this same recognition exercise was carried out at some of our farms located in the Magdalena region.
Sustainability Initiatives Presented to Fyffes
Our foundation played a significant role during this visit, leading the delegation through several intervention projects developed with the Fairtrade premium, such as the renovations and classrooms built at the Rural Educational Institution El Osito, the eco-neighborhood project promoted with the Sin Límite Corporation and the Agrosiete S.A.S. Group, the Caricias de Sol Foundation, and the houses acquired by the banana workers of Corbanaexport.
Our foundation’s director and Sustainability Director, Carolina Jaramillo, directly presented to the visitors the plans for the environmental project to be carried out under the implementation of the Fairtrade premium, which will be done in alliance with several Fairtrade corporations, as one of the prioritized investment requirements by this supermarket chain.
Thus, with the implementation of these premiums, Uniban can propose and support high-impact projects that not only contribute to the productive work of these communities but also improve their quality of life through the return of funds in bonds and infrastructure projects.
