We discussed our work in sustainability, carbon footprint, living wage, environmental responsibility, regenerative agriculture, and rational use of water resources at the IV Fairtrade Banana Forum, recently held in the city of Santa Marta.
IV Fairtrade Banana Forum: Key to a Sustainable Agroindustry
This year, Fairtrade and the Latin American and Caribbean Network of Fair Trade Small Producers and Workers (CLAC) organized this space for conversation and learning, held in the city of Santa Marta. This event, also supported by the associations Asbama and Augura, brought together industry leaders, sustainability experts, government representatives, and academics to discuss successful environmental practices implemented by companies.
Carolina Jaramillo Ferrer, our company’s Director of Sustainability and of the Uniban Foundation, participated as a speaker, highlighting the practices developed within the company for ecosystem restoration, implementation of regenerative agriculture, providing fair income to producers, reducing the carbon footprint, and rational use of water resources. She emphasized Uniban’s commitment to sustainability and leadership in the industry.
It is important to mention that during this conversation, we highlighted our ongoing work to preserve wildlife in the regions where we operate, prioritizing species like the Cotton-Top Tamarin, which is endangered. Additionally, we showcased the results obtained from our reforestation programs, school orchards, biological corridors, reuse of raw materials, and the measurement of the carbon footprint in our operations and fruit production, as initiatives that allow us to produce by mimicking nature.
This forum made it clear that the collaboration and shared responsibility of all actors in the supply chain are essential to facing the challenges of the banana industry, laying the foundation for future actions towards sustainability and equity in the sector.
